Lusangazi District is among the fifteen districts in the Eastern Province of Zambia and is approximately 470 km east of Zambia’s capital city – Lusaka. The District has a surface area of 4,519 km² and lies between 13°30′ latitude and 14°45′ longitude, 31° west and 32° east. It shares district boundaries with Petauke in the south and with Sinda and Mambwe in the north-east, as well as Serenje and Chitambo in the north-west, Nyimba in the South west and Lavushimanda in the North. The District has one constituency called Msanzala which has eleven wards namely; Mateyo-Mzeka, Chingolo, Singozi, Lutwazi, Nyakawise, Chikowa, Mawanda, Lusangazi, Ukwimi, Mudonsa and Chisangu respectively.
Lusangazi District has a population of 116,064 (2010 CSO projection) at a growth rate of 2.5%. Lusangazi is a rural district with approximately 98% of the population living in the rural parts of the district while the other 2% live in the urban part that has access to electricity. The average annual population growth rate is 2.5% which is above the provincial annual population rate of 2.6%. Lusangazi has a youthful population with the age group between 15-34 years being 30%.
The population density is 36.6 persons per square kilometres (Central Statistical Office, 2012).
Lusangazi District being typically rural and the main commercial activity of is agriculture which includes Farming and Livestock rearing. However, the district accommodates several Game ranches for small scale tourism activities. There are also several small-scale mining activities within Lusangazi ward which enhances the social economic activities of the local people and non-local people. Livelihood is also supported by small scale trading. The developmental prospects for Lusangazi district include; Granite Mining, Gold Panning, Lime Plant, Wind/ Solar energy and Tourism activities.
The Nsenga people, who are said to have entered the country from Malawi are predominantly the owners of the land.
The major settlements are concentrated on the Plateau, which covers the central, eastern and southern parts of the District. Most of the valley areas have scanty settlements as it is in the Game Management Area and despite having good soils, is very hilly.
The Council provides a forum for local representation, which empowers the local people to identify and represent local interests to central government and other organisations. It is also a legislative body and has power to make by-laws and regulations.
The operations of the Local Authority are regulated by Central Government through the Ministry of Local Government who has power under the Local Government Act Cap 281 to confirm, amend or revoke by laws issued by the Council and to make regulations which Council should comply with.
Lusangazi District has Thirteen (13) Councillors who are elected (Including the Council Chairperson) and two Chiefs (Chief Sandwe and Chief Nyamphande). Lusangazi district has Eleven (11) wards namely Chisangu, Ukwimi, Lusangazi,Mawanda Lutwazi,Mateyo Mzeka, Singozi, Nyakawise, Chingolo,Mudonsa and Chikowa.
