Lusangazi District joined the rest of the country in commemorating Labor Day on 1st May 2026, with a strong call for job security, skills development, and protection of workers’ pensions. The event was officiated by District Commissioner Mrs. Margaret Chisomo Zulu Banda as Guest of Honour and held at New Mzumwa Primary School.
In her keynote address, Mrs. Banda described workers as the backbone of the economy and reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving working conditions through job creation and skills development initiatives such as the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), the Imisepela platform, and Zambia National Service (ZNS) training programmes. She also highlighted reduced inflation and the government’s efforts to create a conducive environment for trade, employment, and agriculture.
She emphasized the importance of this year’s theme, “Securing Zambia’s Future of Work: Protecting Jobs, Skills and Pensions for Decent Work for All,” urging employers to prioritize job security and continuous skills development. She further stressed the need to strengthen pension systems and called on workers to remain dedicated and adaptable.
Speaking on behalf of the labor movement, Mr. Mulongo commended the government for job creation and efforts to stabilize the economy, while noting the high cost of living. He urged workers to acquire new skills to adapt to technological changes and called for safer, fairer workplaces free from political interference and casualization.
Senior Induna Nyamphande, speaking on behalf of the Royal Highnesses, encouraged workers and small-scale farmers to remain hardworking, noting their vital role in national development. Chief Sandwe was also in attendance.
