Lusangazi Town Council Chairperson, Blackson Tembo, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving the health of all citizens through the National Health Strategic Plan. This includes strengthening immunisation services to ensure every eligible child is protected.
Speaking during the launch of the Round One Novel Polio Vaccination Campaign in Nkuku Zalila area, Mr Tembo emphasized that the initiative comes in response to the recent detection of poliovirus in environmental samples—an indication that the virus is circulating within communities and putting children under five at risk.
Under the theme “Polio is preventable – get your child vaccinated,” he urged parents and guardians to take full advantage of the campaign and ensure their children are immunised.
Mr Tembo also encouraged communities to remain alert and report any suspected cases of Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP), especially in children aged 15 years and below, stressing that early reporting is critical in preventing the spread of the disease.
He further called on traditional leaders to play an active role in mobilising communities and promoting participation in the campaign.
Meanwhile, Dr Lloyd Mwandamina, representing the District Director of Health Services, appealed to parents to cooperate with health workers during the door-to-door exercise and ensure all eligible children receive the vaccine.
A community member, Levy Phiri, expressed gratitude to the government for the initiative, describing it as vital in safeguarding children’s health. He also called for continued sensitisation to promote accurate information and avoid misconceptions about the campaign.
