LUSANGAZI TOWN COUNCIL COMMEMORATES WORLD HEALTH DAY UNDER THE THEME “TOGETHER FOR HEALTH: STAND WITH SCIENCE”

Lusangazi Town Council today joined the global community in commemorating World Health Day under the theme “Together for Health: Stand with Science,” reinforcing the importance of evidence-based approaches in advancing public health and community well-being.
The event featured a 12-kilometre Walk for Health, drawing participation from council officials, health personnel, and members of the public. The walk served as a vibrant, practical demonstration of how regular physical activity contributes to good health, while also fostering unity and community engagement.
Speaking during the commemoration, Council Secretary Mr. Tembo Sekani underscored the power of collective responsibility in safeguarding public health. He noted that science remains essential in shaping effective health interventions and urged residents to embrace health guidelines and innovations that improve quality of life.
Mr. Sekani further highlighted the multiple benefits of keeping fit, stating: “Regular physical activity—such as the 12-kilometre walk we have just completed—strengthens the heart, reduces the risk of non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension, boosts mental health by reducing stress and anxiety, improves sleep, and enhances overall productivity. I encourage every resident, regardless of age, to make physical activity a daily habit. A fit population is not only healthier but also more resilient and economically active.”
Council Chairperson Mr. Blackson Selemani Tembo reaffirmed the council’s dedication to supporting health initiatives across the district. He called on the community to actively engage in programmes that promote sanitation, disease prevention, and general wellness, stressing that a healthy population is fundamental to sustainable development.
Senior Health Inspector Mr. Mwankongozao Roy Kaonga emphasized adherence to public health standards, urging residents to maintain high levels of hygiene, practice proper waste management, and seek accurate health information from credible sources to curb the spread of diseases.
Community Development Officer Mr. Anthony Makaliki stressed the need for grassroots involvement in health-related programmes, noting that community participation is crucial to ensuring health messages reach every household and lead to meaningful action. He also specifically encouraged greater participation of women and girls in active sports.
The commemoration served as a powerful reminder that achieving better health outcomes requires close collaboration between government institutions, health professionals, and the community at large. Lusangazi Town Council reaffirmed its commitment to building a healthier, more informed society through science-driven initiatives.
